Devlog #1 - Technical Demo Progress

Welcome! This is my first devlog for Y Horror in Space. The name is currently a working title, but this may or may not change. Y Horror in Space is developed in Unity3D.

Below lists what is achieved and next steps to anticipate for the game.

Movement and Interaction Mechanics

The movements and interactions are early stage. Right now, it is possible to interact with objects by using one of the five possible interaction methods listed in game. Similar to some point and click games, it is possible to highlight all objects of interest.

Dialogue Mechanics

Inspired by what is usually seen in visual novels, I created a dialogue system to allow a comfortable viewing experience. In game, you will be able to speed up the dialogue and fast progress through dialogue. To date, I have implemented letter-by-letter text, speeding up the dialogue, slowing it down, avatar with the dialogue, automatically playing dialogue, etc.

I’m also planning on developing a small markup language in order to add fun effects to the dialogue or something similar.

Inventory and Menus

This is early stage. I currently only have a draft on how this will look like and minor scripts allowing for some basic interactions. The premise in the game is that everything is a card similar to how it would be in a board game.

This is something currently being worked on and will probably be updated soon!

Battle System

The game will have a fair share of battles and similar special events. In battles, the player will be using the cards he gathered. There will also be separate cards for conditions and events.

This is at the earliest stage... Bah! It wasn't worked on yet...

Horror Atmosphere

Y Horror in Space will possess various elements to build up a suspenseful atmosphere and horror styled game play. The game will follow mechanics of having health and sanity, which both will influence the player’s character. The game will also have jump scares. More on this is coming soon.

Story and Characters

As of right now, this is limited. The premise is simple. The main character wakes up in a cell in spaceship losing all his memories. The player is taken through the main character's cell as a form of a tutorial and learns basic information about himself. Initially, I started developing one character, John Stonearm, a typical soldier type of character that is more of a doer than thinker. According to MBTI, he will be more of an ISTJ or ESTJ type. He is easily angered, cunning, and prefers to use brute force and heavy weaponry over diplomacy. For the final version, I would like to have a more diverse set of characters, and I am also thinking of implementing a co-op mode that would allow others to play as four prisoners at the same time.

Y Horror in Space currently uses some of the assets I had on my Unity Asset Store as well as some free assets from Itch.io and some AI art. I desire to replace some of these assets and AI art eventually.

I have high hopes that this game will eventually progress pass a tech demo. It is not the most ambitious project unless an individual accounts for the co-op mode. However, it is possible I will work on a different project after the tech demo, but this will depend on how popular Y Horror in Space becomes.

Thank you, Yasuzume
